Getting Started – We Love Beginners

If you’ve never picked up needles or need a little refresher, this class is for you. We will make simple squares and turn them into trendy fingerless mitts.

Learn: provisional cast on, buttonholes, short rows (without wrap and turn), kitchener or 3-needle bind-off

Materials:  Size #6 -32 inch circular needle, 1125 – 1800 (check size) heavy DK or light worsted yarn such as Kenzie, Feederbrook or Polwarth Shimmer, several pair of stitch holders or extra set of circular needles in #6 or smaller, buttons – 8 buttons – 4 for front, 4 for sleeves; tapestry needle

Homework: Make a swatch: Cast on 30 stitches and knit in ALL GARTER for 18 rows.

Would you like to make a sweater that fits and flatters? With CustomFit, we can take your knitting and your body and create a pattern perfectly suited to you.  It works like this: we take your measurements (by appt.) you knit a swatch and choose your sweater elements (style, neckline, sleeve length, etc.) we create a pattern just for you.  Design and fit are built in, so you get to make all the fun choices  (“I want a long sleeved v-neck cardigan in Stone Soup Fingering!”), without worrying about the hard ones (“How much ease do I need in my waist?”).

During your 30-minute personal CustomFit appointment. We will take your measurements, then look at yarn and design choices. Once your swatch is complete, bring it back and we’ll create your custom pattern.

Cost: $30 (includes pattern, measurements and yarn consultation)

Tired of getting stuck every time your stitches don’t look quite right? Learn some simple fixes and you’ll soon be knitting into the night.

Learn to: identify and repair drop stitches, twisted stitches and accidental increases

Homework:  Make two swatches with #8 or larger needles and some light colored worsted weight yarn.  Cast on 15 stitches.  First Swatch: Knit 4 inches knitting every row.  Second Swatch: Knit 4 inches but on this swatch knit one row, purl the next row, and continue alternating a knit and purl row.  Leave your work on the needles and bring them with you.  We’ll be using these to practice knit fixes.

Materials: Knit Fix book, light colored worsted weight yarn, size 8 needles, crochet hook size E, F or G

March 8 at 1pm – going back when you’ve made a mistake 

Jody will show you how to unknit if you are going back a few stitches and how to rip, if you are going back a few rows. Please bring $10 and a “4”x4” swatch in light colored worsted weight yarn still on the needles.

March 22 at 1pm – cast on: Double Start and German Twisted(also known as “Old Norwegian”)

If you’ve got the long-tail cast on down, its time to learn something new.  Karen will show you two variations of the long-tail cast-on.  Both are stretchy, making them perfect for hats and cuffs.

Please bring $10 and size 8 needles and light colored worsted weight yarn.

April 12 at 1pm – cabling without a cable needle 

For me, cabling is more rhythmic when you don’t have to stop, pick up a cable needle, slide your stitches, knit, put down the needle and repeat.  Let Julie show you how to avoid the extra fiddling.

Our Registration Policy:

All classes are held at String Theory Yarn Co. Most classes are limited to 8 people in order to ensure that everyone gets individual attention. Payment for each class is due at registration. If String Theory cancels the class for any reason, we will refund your registration fee.  If you cancel at least one week prior to your scheduled class, you will receive a store credit for your registration fee. If you cancel less than a week prior to the class, you will receive store credit only if we are able to fill your spot.  Unfortunately, we are unable to provide make-ups.
